The Dual Award Programme

The Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), Spain and Institut Brittany d'Enseignement Supérieur (IBES), France are now offering Dual Awards for Master of Art in Teaching English to Speakers in Other Languages (TESOL). The mode of delivery is either fully online or blended learning where some face to face classes are conducted at IBES centres outside France. For the Hong Kong Center, these programmes are delivered fully online.

Programme Structure

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or TESOL encompasses both TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). The Master of Arts (TESOL) is designed specifically designed for teachers of English who seek to adapt their teaching methods, their expectations of students, their teaching materials and their classroom activities to their local environment and the needs of their learners.

The programme is made up of 6 courses and a Dissertation. Each of the 6 regular courses has a credit value of 10 ECTS while the Dissertation has a credit value of 30 ECTS:

  • Digital Technology in Second Language Education
  • Approaches and Strategies for Language Teaching
  • Principles of Second Language Acquisition
  • Introduction to General Linguistics
  • Design, Evaluation and Assessment in TESOL
  • Research Methodology in Second Language Learning
  • Dissertation

Assessments

Varied assessment tasks or instruments will be employed:

(i) Assessment Instruments Work-based Reports
Selected units will contain one work-based report with word limitations of usually between 3,500 - 4,000 words. Each unit document will outline the specific word limit.

(ii) Articles / Assignments
Written assignments are designed to allow students to demonstrate understanding of the unit, which students must then apply to an issue concerned with that particular subject area in their own organisation, or one with which they are familiar. Students are either required to identify a process, task or problem which they must describe, analyse and discuss.

(iii) Case Studies
Selected case studies may be incorporated into the assessment of units.

(iv) Simulation
Often students will be assessed via scenario and simulation types of tasks related to the intended learning outcomes.

(V) Dissertation
The final dissertation has a word count of between 12,000 and 15,000 words.

Master of Arts in TESOL Titulo Propio from UCAM

Entry Requirements

  1. A Bachelor's Degree qualification in any subject from a recognised institution; or
  2. A professional qualification equivalent to a degree and a minimum of two years of working experience; and
  3. IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Those who have undertaken either an undergraduate or professional qualification taught and assessed in English will also be accepted as having met the English proficiency requirement.
